The National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur, widely known as NIT Jamshedpur, commenced its establishment in the academic year of 1960. It is one of the 31 NITs in India and is given the status of Deemed University. The institute has been approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the Government of India. The institute was formerly established as a Regional Institute of Technology and was later upgraded to the National Institute of Technology.
The basic idea of establishing the institute is to become one of the premier technical institutions to meet the future requirements.
The National Institutional Ranking Framework has ranked NIT Jamshedpur in the 101-150 band amongst engineering colleges in India.
