About Elphinstone College, Mumbai
Elphinstone College was established in the year 1835 and can be listed in the category of one of the oldest college in the history of the Indian education system. It was incepted in Mumbai, Maharashtra one of the places having an influential historical value. The institute is affiliated to the University of Mumbai and accredited to NAAC. At present Elphinstone College Courses includes both undergraduate and postgraduate courses divided majorly in 4 streams of Science, Commerce and Banking, Arts and Vocational studies.
Elphinstone College campus holds a historical value too and the main college building has been classified as a grade 1 heritage structure because of its Gothic Architecture. College building which is a symbol of British Raj heritage is one of the most identified buildings of South Mumbai by the people as well government. Among the people of states, the college is famous for its Romanesque Transitional style building which is a grade 1 heritage structure. The building was designed long back by Trubshaw and supervised by Khan Bahadur Muncherjee Murzban, it has taken years till the building finally got completed in 1888.
By the nineteenth century, Bombay was a prosperous community for oceanic exchange and business. In 1824 an English school was set up by the Bombay Native Education Society for Indian students.
In the year 1827, one bill was passed that an organization for the advancement of training ought to be set up under Bombay Native Education Society and be assigned as "Elphinstone College other than High School. This is to pay respect to Hon. Mountstuart Elphinstone, the withdrawing legislative governor of Bombay who was in charge of starting advanced education in the city. A collective fund of Rs.2,29,636.00 was gathered by open membership to finance showing residencies in the English language and the Arts, Science and Literature of Europe. The residencies were to pay tribute to Mountstaurt Elphinstone. The school was formally established in 1835. The classes started in 1836, at Town Hall, with the initial two teachers: Arthur Bedford Orlebar (Natural Philosophy) and John Harkness.
For Admission in Elphinstone College, the candidate needs to have qualified 10+2 from respective streams with the required minimum percentage. Final seats are allotted on basis of merit and overall performance of the student. Unlike other colleges admission process at EC Mumbai is offline and candidate needs to visit the institute personally to apply for the respective course. The admission starts from the first week of May every year.
