About Bishop Heber College
Bishop Heber College is a minority educational institution which was established in the year 1966 at Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu. However, the history of the college can be traced from the year 1762, when Christian Frederick Schwartz- the first German Missionary established a small school in Tiruchirapalli. Later, the school was renamed after Reginald Heber, the Lord Bishop of Calcutta. In 1882, it became a first Grade College and then it was known as SPG College. Later, in the year 1934, it was merged with Madras Christian College.
The college was affiliated to Bharathidasan University and was granted the status of 'autonomy' in the year 2004. It offers 13 Under Graduate, 18 Post Graduate, 4 Post Graduate Diploma Programmes and 3 Diploma Programmes in the field of Science, Commerce and Humanities.
BHC College is ranked third by NIRF 2018 Rankings and is accredited A+ level by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). BHC was also awarded the status of “College of Excellence” by the University Grant Commission (UGC) in the year 2017.

Bishop Heber College has separate departments for Economics, Commerce, History, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English, Tamil, Botany, Biotechnology, Computer Application, Computer Science and Management Studies. The BHC campus is spread over an area of 200 acres and comprises of academic blocks, library, sports facilities, IT support section, Hostels, Student Service Centre, Student Counselling Centre, College Health Care and Cafeterias.
The library of Bishop Heber College carries 1,12,415 books, 267 subscribed journals, 15 national dailies and 4,034 back volumes of journals along with 97,000+ e-books and 6,000+ e-journals. BHC library also carries non-printed documents including 8 audio cassettes, 350 video cassettes, 160 maps and charts, 987 DVDs & CDs and 987 floppy discs.
The sports facilities at BHC includes cricket ground, football field, badminton court, floodlit volleyball court, volleyball court, floodlit basketball court, kabaddi courts, indoor sports hall for table tennis and chess and a fitness centre.
