WBCS Syllabus 2024

 

The responsibility of conducting the WBCS Exam lies with the West Bengal Public Service Commission. The WBCS Exam is structured into three stages: Preliminary, Main, and Interview. In this section, you will gain an understanding of the WBCS Syllabus and comprehend the WBCS Exam Pattern for both the Prelims and Mains Exam.

 

  • The WBCS Preliminary stage entails a single paper, namely General Studies, without the inclusion of an Aptitude Test, which sets it apart from various other state Public Service Commission Exams.
  • The WBCS Main Exam consists of six obligatory papers and an additional optional subject that involves two papers.
  • Optional Subjects are designated for candidates selecting Group A and Group B services.
  • Among the six mandatory papers, four follow a Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) format:
  •  General Studies I
  • General Studies II
  • The Constitution of India and Indian Economy, encompassing the functions of the Reserve Bank of India
  • Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning

 

The Mains Exam, conducted in a Conventional/Essay format, can only be attempted in either Bengali or English.

 

WBCS Prelims Syllabus 2024

Candidates from the Darjeeling district’s Scheduled Tribe and those from the three hill subdivisions, Darjeeling Sadar, Mirik, and Kurseong, may only appear in the Darjeeling center. There are eight areas or themes in the WBCS Prelims Syllabus.

There are 200 (MCQ) questions in all, with 25 marks assigned to each topic. The duration will be 2.5 hours. All candidates are shortlisted for the main exam round based on their performance in the preliminary exam. The final merit list will not be determined without taking into account the results obtained in the WBCS preliminary exam. WBCS Mains Syllabus 2024

Candidates who pass the preliminary exam and are eligible will be invited to take the WBCS main exam. There are six required papers in the WBCS main syllabus PDF and one optional topic that is split into two examinations. 200 marks are given for each main paper, and the exam lasts three hours for each paper.

WBCS Syllabus Preparation

The WBCS exam is the premier exam of the West Bengal Public Service Commission, and hence the competition in the exam is also high. The candidates are required to prepare for the WBCS in a planned manner to get maximum marks in the exam and ensure their selection. 

  • The candidates are required to devise a customized preparation strategy as per their abilities and interests and religiously follow the same.
  • The candidates should read and make a list of topics given in the syllabus and make provisions in the preparation plan to prepare all of them.
  • Make provisions for answer writing, practice with mock exams and previous year’s question papers, and revise.
  • The candidates must prepare the preparation notes because they are very useful at the time of revision for examinations
  • Prepare current affairs daily to reduce the baggage for the next day.

WBCS Interview

After passing the WBCS Mains Exam, candidates enter the ‘Interview’ phase. A board appointed by the WBCS conducts these interviews. The interviewers evaluate various aspects:

 

  • The candidate meets a board that has information about their career and interests, as provided in the Application Form.
  • The interview’s aim is to assess how well the candidate fits into the state services. This judgment comes from a panel of skilled and unbiased observers.
  • Alongside their academic knowledge, candidates should be familiar with current events within and outside their state.
