University of Kerala Highlights

Universityof Kerala (Kerala University), formerly known as the University of Travancore, was established in the year 1937 in Trivandrum, Kerala. The university was set up by The Maharajah of Travancore, Sri Chithirathirunal BalaramaVarma,whowas also the first Chancellor of the university. Sir C. P. Ramaswamy Iyer, the then Prime Minister of Travancore, was the first Vice-Chancellor of the University. More than 7 decades have passed since the establishment of the Kerala University and ever since it has grown and transformed with time. At present, the university has over 150 affiliated colleges spread over Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha Districts and some parts of Pathanamthitta District.

The colleges affiliated with University of Kerala offer a spectrum of courses to students which includes arts, humanities, medicine, engineering, management, music etc. However, the day-to-day administration of these institutions is not under the purview of the University. The University also has a National College of Physical Education affiliated to it. The total number of students in these colleges is over 84,000. In addition to these, the University of Kerala has forty-one departments of teaching and research. The university is re-accredited by NAAC with A-Grade and is one the first 16 Universities in India.

University of Kerala also has an active senate and academic council with students being actively represented in both. Overall, the main aim of the Kerala University is to empower students in every field possible. These efforts have also resulted in the university bagging top honors such as Indira Gandhi National award for best NSS activities.

Library

The Kerala University library system contains more than 350,000 books, and that number grows by about 5,000 each year. The library subscribes to almost 500 journals, periodicals, and magazines and gives users access to digital resources, like UGC Infonet.

The Campus Library, found on the Kariavattom campus, has a smaller collection with over 7,000 books and more than 60 periodicals. In addition to this central library, the university's 43 teaching departments keep their own libraries. Most of these (34) are at the Karivattom Campus, while 6 are at the Senate House Campus. The Library and Information Science department is located in the main Kerala University Library building, but the Music department is at the Government Women’s College campus in Vazhuthacaud. The Education Department is at Thycadu.

The University Study Centre in Alappuzha works as a reference library. It is there for graduate students, researchers, and faculty from Kerala University-affiliated colleges in the Alappuzha area, as well as students from the Institute of Distance Education, UITs, B.Ed Centers, and the IMK extension center. There is also a University Study Centre in Kollam.

Hostels

The University of Kerala has six hostels located at the Kariavattom campus and Thycaud in Thiruvananthapuram. At the Kariavattom campus, there are two men's hostels for postgraduate and research students, which can house 187 students. Three women's hostels, two for postgraduate students and one for research students, offer space for 579 students. A women's hostel is also located at Vazhuthacaud. These hostels offer admission to undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil, and research students.

There are boys' and girls' hostels on campus.

Additional Facilities

The campus has many sports facilities like courts for basketball and shuttlecock, and fields for cricket, football, and hockey, so students can play sports and work as a team. The computer lab and other labs help students learn by doing. Also, the cafeteria, gym, medical services, and Wi-Fi make campus life easier and help students get things done. There's even a shuttle to get around.

Besides academics and fun, the school has a big auditorium for events. Other important places include a computer center, seminar rooms, a bank with an ATM, a post office, and a guest house. These support students, employees, and visitors with everything they might require.
