World University Rankings 2027: New Data Released

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027 will assess 2,297 universities across 118 countries. This represents a 4% increase from the 2,191 institutions ranked in 2026. The rankings will be released on September 30, 2026 .

Global Participation Grows

Albania and Malawi will appear in the rankings for the first time. Ethiopia returns to the list after a one-year absence. This expansion highlights growing global engagement in university assessment.

India Remains Second-Largest Contributor

India has 143 universities in the 2027 rankings. This maintains its position as the second most represented country. The United States leads with 168 ranked institutions.

Japan features 112 universities. The United Kingdom now has 110 institutions, placing it fifth in overall representation.

Methodology for Rankings

THE assesses universities across four key areas. These include teaching, the research environment, research quality, and international outlook.

Teaching (Learning Environment)

This metric examines teaching quality. Factors include academic reputation and staff-to-student ratios. It also considers doctorate-to-bachelor’s ratios and institutional income.

Research Environment

The research environment measures reputation and income. It also assesses the overall strength of a university's research ecosystem.

Research Quality

Research quality is judged by citation data. Impact, excellence, and influence of research are key indicators.

International Outlook

This component evaluates global presence. It looks at the proportion of international students and staff. International research collaborations are also considered.

Looking Back at 2026 Rankings

In the 2026 rankings, the University of Oxford held the top spot for the tenth consecutive year. It performed strongly in the research environment category. Princeton University was the highest-ranked U.S. university at third place.

India achieved its highest representation in 2026, second only to the U.S. China also increased its number of top-tier universities.
