Uttarakhand: Cloudburst in Uttarkashi Sparks Statewide Emergency
On August 5, a catastrophic cloudburst in the Dharali region of Uttarkashi unleashed flash floods that claimed at least four lives and left more than 100 people missing. The region has since been on high alert, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for continued heavy rainfall.
In response, district administrations have ordered the shutdown of all schools and Anganwadi centres in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Almora, and Pauri Garhwal, effective immediately and expected to remain closed through August 10. Relief teams have been deployed across affected areas for ongoing rescue efforts.
Dehradun, while not directly impacted by the flash floods, also saw school closures on August 4 following an orange alert for heavy rainfall, with officials taking preemptive safety measures.
Uttar Pradesh: Varanasi and Kanpur Affected by Ganga Flooding
In Uttar Pradesh, rising waters of the Ganga River in Varanasi caused widespread waterlogging and transportation disruptions, prompting authorities to close all schools up to Class 12 on August 5 and 6. Boat services on the river have been suspended, and streets remain submerged in knee-deep water in several areas.
Kanpur also enforced school closures on August 5 as weather forecasts predicted intense rainfall. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
Bihar: Over 70 Schools Closed in Bhojpur
Flooding in Bihar's Bhojpur district has led to the temporary closure of 71 schools across Shahpur, Barhara, and Koilwar blocks from August 5 to 9. To ensure minimal disruption to students' learning, many teachers have been redeployed to nearby functioning schools.

Although national-level exams like CUET-UG, CUET-PG counselling, and UPSC Mains (beginning August 22) fall outside the current flood-impacted period, students in affected districts should stay informed via local authorities about any changes to school-level assessments or minor competitive exam schedules.
