West Bengal schools will implement a new syllabus aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 starting in 2028 . State Education Minister Dipak Barman announced the transition, which will affect all primary to higher secondary classes.

Curriculum Review Underway

A syllabus-cum-curriculum committee has begun reviewing the current educational framework. This panel will assess textbooks for the 2027 academic session. The committee's recommendations will inform the final syllabus decisions.

NEP 2020 Structure and Goals

The NEP 2020 replaces the previous 10+2 system with a 5+3+3+4 structure. This new model includes early childhood education for ages 3-6.

  • Foundational Stage: Ages 3-8
  • Preparatory Stage: Ages 8-11
  • Middle Stage: Ages 11-14
  • Secondary Stage: Ages 14-18

A key goal is ensuring all children achieve basic reading, writing, and math skills by Class 3 . The policy removes strict divisions between academic streams, arts, and vocational training. Students will have more subject choice in high school.

Focus on Practical Learning

Curriculum content will focus on essential concepts. This aims to foster critical thinking and experiential learning. Practical crafts will be introduced in Classes 6-8. Students will also participate in a 10-day internship with local experts.

The medium of instruction will be the child's home language or mother tongue up to Class 5 where possible.

Exam Reforms

Board exams for Classes 10 and 12 will test core competencies, not rote memorization. Students can take these exams up to two times annually to improve scores. Assessment will move to multidimensional report cards, including peer and teacher feedback.

Support for Out-of-School Children

The education department has partnered with the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) . This collaboration aims to identify and certify out-of-school children at secondary and higher secondary levels. Registered students can learn at their own pace. They can appear for exams from anywhere in India within a five-year timeframe.
