Abhijeet Dipke stated his U.S. education was funded by a Boston University scholarship and a loan he is still repaying. This followed an inquiry by RTI activist Amit Trivedi. Trivedi questioned how Dipke's father, a retired engineer, could afford U.S. study on a monthly salary of approximately Rs 60,000 to Rs 65,000. Dipke denied any unexplained wealth.
Dipke also stated his organization, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), will rely on crowdfunding. He committed to transparency regarding public funds. He mentioned that ordinary citizens provided food and water during the anti-NEET paper leak protest.
US Degree Costs and Affordability
Studying in the United States can cost Indian students between Rs 31 lakh and Rs 77 lakh annually. This figure varies by college and location. Public university tuition ranges from USD 26,000 to USD 46,500 per year.
Private university tuition fees are higher. They can range from USD 46,500 to over USD 67,500 annually. Housing adds significant expense. A shared dorm costs about USD 1,000 to USD 1,800 monthly. A shared apartment costs approximately USD 700 to USD 1,200 per month. Private apartments are more expensive.
For average Indian families, these costs represent a substantial financial burden. One year of study can equal many years of savings. Therefore, students often combine scholarships, family savings, part-time work, and education loans.
Taking an education loan can be beneficial. This is true if the degree leads to strong job prospects. It is also important if the total debt remains manageable. Loans pose a risk if fees are extremely high and job returns are low.
Impact of Proposed US Funding Cuts
Former US President Donald Trump proposed budget cuts. These cuts aimed to reduce National Science Foundation (NSF) funding by over half. STEM education funding was slated for a 75 percent reduction.
