The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has successfully deployed a real-time face authentication system during the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026. This technology aims to increase exam security and prevent impersonation.
Candidates underwent live facial image verification at examination centers. Their live photos were matched against images submitted during the application process. The system operated using an Android mobile application developed by UPSC. Technical support came from the National e-Governance Division.
Fast and Scalable Verification
The face authentication process averaged 6-8 seconds per candidate. This speed reduced delays and long queues at entry points. The system handled over 7,000 invigilators concurrently. It processed approximately 12,000 authentications per minute.
The application required no special hardware. It functioned on standard Android smartphones. Invigilators used their own devices for verification.
Implementation Details
UPSC distributed a Standard Operating Procedure to states, districts, and exam venues. This ensured a uniform implementation across the country.
Enhancing Exam Integrity
UPSC Chairman Dr. Ajay Kumar stated the system’s primary goal is to eliminate impersonation. He noted the internal development of the technology with NeGD support. Implementing the system on a large scale presented the main challenge.
The successful deployment of real-time face authentication in the Civil Services Prelims 2026 marks an advancement in exam security. This demonstrates technology's role in improving efficiency and safeguarding the credibility of competitive examinations.
