Uttar Pradesh schools may soon offer Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an optional subject. This proposal emerged during a workshop for the Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Council. The workshop concluded on August 7, 2026 .
New Curriculum Framework Under Development
The state is developing a new framework for secondary education. This is separate from the National Curriculum Framework, which primarily focused on elementary levels. The new framework aims to better suit secondary school students. It will incorporate local aspects of Uttar Pradesh. It will also address evolving learning needs for older students.
AI Subject Proposal Discussed
A Joint Director of Education in Lucknow proposed AI as an optional subject. This suggestion was made during the workshop. The director emphasized studying both benefits and drawbacks of AI. This review must happen before any decision is finalized. The proposal is currently a draft component of the new curriculum.
Workshop Involves Educators and Officials
Thirty-two principals from government secondary schools attended the workshop. Education officials also participated. They shared views on subject goals and student skill development. The draft framework has been distributed for feedback. Government school principals, district inspectors, regional secretaries, and joint directors are reviewing it.
Broader Educational Reforms Suggested
The workshop also covered other educational improvements. A principal suggested including student emotional development in assessments. Another proposed a language lab to improve communication skills. One inspector recommended teaching students about their local environment. This aims to build social responsibility. A different inspector advocated for joyful school environments. This includes respecting student individuality.
Future Challenges Highlighted
An Additional Secretary from the Meerut regional office noted the draft's positive vision. They also recommended including future challenges. Bhagwati Singh, Secretary of the Secondary Education Council, closed the workshop. He stated that the framework's vision is crucial for implementation.
