Uttar Pradesh officials approved the Rani Lakshmibai Scooty Yojana on August 19, 2024 . The scheme provides free scooters to top undergraduate girl students in higher education. The state cabinet, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, passed the decision. Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhay stated approximately 50,000 students could benefit this year.
Scheme Details
The program targets meritorious girl students. They must be studying in state universities, private universities, government colleges, or aided and self-financed institutions. The free scooter goes to the top 5 percent of undergraduate students. These students must have passed the 2025-26 academic session .
A family annual income limit of Rs 12 lakh applies. Selected students also need a valid driving license. Students from families of martyrs, destitute families, and those with disabilities are exempt from the merit requirement. These students receive scooters regardless of academic ranking.
Scooter Provisions
The scheme will distribute petrol-powered scooters. The government selected petrol models due to wide availability of service centers and fuel stations. The state will cover registration fees and insurance costs. Each recipient gets a helmet, accessories, and five liters of petrol.
Scooters will be procured through a selection process. Proposals will be invited via a dedicated portal. The initiative aims to improve student mobility. It seeks to encourage continued higher education for young women. Easier and safer travel supports women's empowerment.
