The University Grants Commission (UGC) has warned students against enrolling in degree programs offered through unapproved EdTech partnerships. The regulator has identified 32 universities operating without recognition, flagging them for potential fraudulent degree offerings.

UGC Crackdown on Unrecognized Universities

The UGC issued an advisory cautioning students, parents, and organizations. It specifically targets online degree programs formed via illegitimate collaborations between EdTech firms and unrecognized universities. These collaborations are not permitted under current Indian regulations.

Degrees or diplomas from these unrecognized institutions hold no legal validity. They cannot be used for further studies, government jobs, or professional certifications. The UGC stressed that EdTech companies can only provide digital platforms and technical support.

Full responsibility for teaching, assessment, faculty management, and degree awarding rests solely with recognized universities. This includes central, state, deemed, and private institutions.

The UGC has released a revised list of 32 self-styled and unauthorized institutions. These entities operate in violation of the UGC Act, 1956.

How to Verify Degree Authenticity

Students should verify credentials before enrolling in any course. This includes online, distance, or regular programs.

  • Check the UGC Distance Education Bureau website (deb.ugc.ac.in) for university approval for Distance or Online Learning Programs (ODL).
  • Confirm the institution is a recognized university under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act.
  • Ensure the EdTech company acts only as a service provider, not the degree issuer or academic content provider.
  • Consult the UGC's Fake Universities List before making any payment.
