The University Grants Commission (UGC) has named the Institute of Management and Engineering (IME) in Delhi as a fake university. This decision brings the total number of fake universities identified by the UGC to 22 . The UGC has asked all students and parents to carefully check if a college is officially recognised before taking admission.
IME, located in Kotla Mubarakpur, Delhi , was found to be operating without proper legal backing. The UGC notice clearly states that IME is not set up under any law passed by the Central or State government. It also does not have official recognition under Sections 2(f) or 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. This means IME cannot legally offer university degrees to students.
According to the UGC, IME was wrongly offering degree-level courses. Any certificate or qualification received from this institution will have no academic or professional value. Students who get degrees from IME will find them useless for jobs or further studies.
The UGC regularly updates its list of fake institutions to protect students from fraud. Students and parents must always visit the official UGC website (ugc.ac.in) to check the latest list of recognised and fake universities before making admission decisions. The earlier list had 21 fake universities . With IME added, the new total is 22. The full list of universities that UGC has declared fake earlier is given below:

The UGC has made it clear that only certain types of institutions are allowed to give out degrees in India. These are:
- Universities set up by an Act of Parliament (Central Law).
- Universities set up by an Act of a State Legislature (State Law).
- Institutions officially recognised as 'deemed universities' under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 .
Students should always confirm these legal details and recognition status directly from the UGC website or official university documents before enrolling in any course.
