The Telangana government has approved a new rule for medical students. From the 2025-26 academic year , 85% of postgraduate (PG) medical and dental seats in private colleges, under the management quota, will be reserved for students who are permanent residents of Telangana. This decision aims to help local students get more opportunities for higher medical education in their home state.
This change was announced by Honorable Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy . The Health Minister, Damodar Rajanarasimha , had previously raised this request, following long-standing demands from students across Telangana.
What is NEET PG?
NEET PG stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate. It is a very important national exam. Students who have completed their MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) degree take this exam. Passing NEET PG allows them to get admission into postgraduate medical courses. These courses lead to degrees like MD (Doctor of Medicine) and MS (Master of Surgery). After completing these courses, doctors become specialists in fields like surgery, pediatrics, or cardiology. Many students in India prepare for years to clear NEET PG.
Understanding Management Quota Seats
Medical colleges, especially private ones, have different types of seats:
- Government Quota Seats: These seats are filled based on merit in NEET PG and government rules. Fees are usually lower.
 - Management Quota Seats: These seats are managed by the college administration. They also require a valid NEET PG score. Historically, these seats could be open to students from any state, and fees might be higher.

Earlier, many management quota seats in Telangana were filled under the All India Quota (AIQ) category. This meant students from other states could also get these seats. Also, before 2025, about 60% of management quota seats in Telangana private colleges were open for non-local students.
New Rule: 85% for Telangana Students
The new rule changes how management quota seats will be filled in Telangana. Starting from the 2025-26 session :
- 85% of all management quota PG medical and dental seats in private colleges will be reserved only for students who are permanent residents of Telangana.
 - This means a much larger share of seats will now be specifically for students from Telangana.

This decision directly benefits Telangana students by reducing competition from candidates outside the state for these specific seats.
Impact and Number of Seats
This policy change will directly affect many postgraduate medical and dental seats. The government's decision means a significant number of these seats will now be available only for Telangana students. Here are the numbers:
| Type of Seat | Number of Seats Now Reserved for Telangana Locals (under Management Quota) |
| PG Medical Seats | 318 |
| PG Dental Seats | 70 |
| Total Seats Affected | 388 |
These 388 seats (318 medical + 70 dental) will now be mainly for Telangana residents. This gives local students a much better chance to continue their medical education in their own state. Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha called this new policy a long-awaited and historic step. He believes it will help many Telangana students achieve their dream of becoming specialist doctors.
Next Steps for Students
Students planning to appear for NEET PG 2025 and aspiring for seats in Telangana private medical colleges should note this new rule. They should keep track of official announcements from the Telangana Health Department and admission authorities for detailed guidelines and application processes for the 2025-26 session .
