The Union Government has rejected Telangana’s request for an Indian Institute of Management (IIM). The Ministry of Education stated the state has enough management institutions. The decision was communicated to Parliament this week.

No IIM for Telangana

Telangana’s proposal for a new IIM in Hyderabad was received by the Ministry of Education. However, no current plans exist to sanction the institute. The ministry cited multiple factors influencing the establishment of new national institutions. These include regional distribution, educational needs, resource availability, and the current higher education system.

Government's Rationale

The Ministry of Education explained that Telangana already hosts numerous higher education and management institutes. The central government believes the state’s existing educational infrastructure meets current needs. It sees no immediate requirement for another centrally funded management institute. Telangana has actively pushed for an IIM. State officials highlighted Hyderabad as a major education and technology hub. They offered land for the proposed institute. The Chief Minister raised the issue in meetings with the Prime Minister and Union government representatives.

IIM Establishment Criteria

The ministry emphasized that new IIMs are not solely based on state requests. Several factors guide these decisions:

  • Regional balance of higher education institutions.
  • Existing management education infrastructure.
  • Availability of financial and academic resources.

Telangana's Status

India currently operates 22 Indian Institutes of Management. These are located across 21 states. Telangana remains one of the states without an IIM. Other states without an IIM include Goa, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh.
