Tamil Nadu School Holiday October 24, 2025 Due to Rain

Chennai, October 23, 2025: Schools across many parts of Tamil Nadu may remain closed on October 24, 2025, as heavy to very heavy rainfall continues to lash several districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Red, Orange, and Yellow alerts for various regions due to the ongoing northeast monsoon and the presence of twin low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea.

Reason for Possible School Closures

The northeast monsoon has intensified over Tamil Nadu, bringing continuous and widespread rain. Two low-pressure areas—one in the Bay of Bengal and another in the Arabian Sea—are strengthening, increasing the risk of heavy rainfall and potential flooding in low-lying areas.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and district administrations are likely to declare school holidays depending on local weather conditions. The Chief Minister has directed officials to ensure all precautionary measures are in place, including relief camps and flood-prevention systems.

Rainfall Alerts for October 24, 2025

The IMD’s latest weather forecast indicates that heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely to continue across several districts of Tamil Nadu until October 24. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also expected in some regions.

Color-Coded Weather Alerts Explained

  • Red Alert: Extremely heavy rainfall (above 21 cm) expected in some areas. People are advised to stay indoors and avoid travel.
  • Orange Alert: Very heavy rainfall (7–20 cm) likely in several districts. Authorities should remain prepared for emergency responses.
  • Yellow Alert: Heavy rainfall (up to 11 cm) possible. Citizens are advised to stay alert and updated on local weather reports.
  • Districts Likely to Be Affected

Several districts are under different levels of rain alerts for October 24, 2025. Based on current conditions, the following areas are expected to receive significant rainfall:

  • Red Alert: Cuddalore, Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai, Chengalpattu, Puducherry regions.
  • Orange Alert: Chennai, Thanjavur, Ranipet, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Thiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Ariyalur.
  • Yellow Alert: Vellore, Dharmapuri, Tiruppattur, Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai, Namakkal, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, and Nilgiris.

Schools Already Closed on October 22 and 23

Many districts, including Puducherry, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Kallakurichi, Salem, Perambalur, Namakkal, Tiruppur, and Trichy, declared holidays earlier this week due to persistent rainfall. Authorities may extend the closure to October 24 if heavy rain continues overnight.
