India’s Supreme Court ordered the Central Government on May 25, 2026, to enforce rules for hygienic school facilities. Judges J.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan issued the directive. The court stressed that a lack of sanitary napkins or toilets must not force girls out of school. They stated that biological facts should not lead to discrimination or domestic labor for adolescent girls. The ruling connects menstrual dignity to the Right to Education. This right is guaranteed under Article 21A of the Constitution. The Ministry of Education will collect data to prevent school dropouts. States must report on toilet installation and free sanitary pad provision by August 15, 2026. The Supreme Court set strict deadlines to avoid bureaucratic delays.
