India's Supreme Court has ordered the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to address errors affecting students from the new On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. A three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, issued the directive on [Date of Ruling - Assume a recent date for this example] . The court emphasized that technical issues should not jeopardize students' academic futures.

OSM System Glitches Impact Students

Petitions submitted to the court highlighted problems within the OSM evaluation process. These included unscanned answer sheets, un-evaluated responses, and insufficient training for teachers using the digital portal. Some students faced issues with college admissions due to inaccurate marks generated by the system. These errors caused their overall percentages to fall below required cut-offs.

The court recognized the severity of the situation. The CBSE's pass percentage for the recent examination cycle dropped to 85.2% , the lowest in seven years. This decline is attributed, in part, to the OSM system's failures.

Supreme Court's Directive

The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana alongside CJI Surya Kant, stressed the need to protect student interests. This is particularly critical as college admission processes are currently underway.

The court instructed the CBSE to actively seek solutions. Justices advised the board, "Please find out how you can protect their interest." The directive aims to mitigate the negative impact of the OSM system's shortcomings on students' educational progression.

Investigation Underway

The government has already initiated an inquiry into the OSM system. A one-member committee, headed by retired IAS officer S. Radha Chauhan, is investigating the procurement and technical glitches associated with the portal.
