The Supreme Court will hear a petition challenging the NEET UG 2026 re-test in July. The court postponed the hearing on a plea seeking to delay the re-examination. A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice V. Mohana directed the matter to Justice P.S. Narasimha. This bench is already handling cases related to the NEET UG controversy. This includes the exam's cancellation and the decision for a re-test.
NEET UG Re-Test Plea Sent to Justice P.S. Narasimha Bench
The petition questions the National Testing Agency's (NTA) decision. The NTA canceled the May 3 NEET UG 2026 exam. Allegations of paper leaks and irregularities prompted the cancellation. The court has not made any rulings on the case's merits. It has ordered the petition to be listed before Justice Narasimha's bench. This will happen after the Supreme Court's current working period ends.
Re-Test Scheduled to Proceed
Currently, there are no court orders halting the June 21 re-test. No interim stay has been granted. The re-examination is expected to proceed as planned. The NTA has not issued any official statement on this development.
Petition Argues Nationwide Re-Exam Is Unfair
Former Additional Director General of Health Services, Mangala Kohli, filed the petition. It argues that alleged misconduct was confined to specific individuals or centers. Therefore, canceling the entire exam is unjustified, according to the petition. Lakhs of students who took the exam honestly should not be penalized. The petition states that a nationwide re-test imposes an unfair burden on genuine aspirants. It is considered a disproportionate response.
Calls for Reform in Entrance Exams
The petition also demands reforms in conducting large entrance exams. It seeks enhanced technological security measures. Better monitoring systems are also requested. Greater institutional accountability is a key demand. These changes aim to prevent future issues. The legal challenge remains active. However, the re-NEET exam is likely to proceed on June 21.
