About the Skill Test

The skill test is a crucial stage in the recruitment process. It tests how well a candidate can take dictation in shorthand and then type it out on a computer. This test makes sure that candidates have the practical skills needed for a stenographer's job. The test is computer-based, which means candidates will use a computer for typing.

Language Options and Speed Requirements

Candidates have the choice to take the skill test in either English or Hindi. This allows students to perform in the language they are most comfortable with. Different speed levels are required depending on the post. Candidates must achieve typing speeds of 80, 100, or 120 words per minute (WPM) . These speeds are set to match the demands of the government roles.

Dictation Process and Keyboard Layout

During the skill test, candidates will hear spoken content played through recorded audio CDs. They must listen carefully and write down everything using shorthand. After the dictation, they will transcribe their shorthand notes into typed text on the computer. For those choosing the Hindi skill test, there are two keyboard layouts available: Inscript and Remington. Candidates must select their preferred layout at the start of the test. Once selected, this keyboard layout cannot be changed during the exam. This decision is final for the duration of the skill test.

Specific Time Limits for Each Post

The duration for completing the transcription part of the skill test is different for each post and language combination. These time limits are strictly followed:

  • For candidates applying for Stenographer Grade C , if they choose the English language, they will have 40 minutes to complete the typing. Candidates with a scribe will be given an extended time of 55 minutes .
  • If Stenographer Grade C candidates choose the Hindi language, they will have 55 minutes for typing. Candidates with a scribe will get 75 minutes .
  • For candidates applying for Stenographer Grade D , if they choose the English language, they will have 50 minutes for typing. Candidates with a scribe will receive 70 minutes .
  • If Stenographer Grade D candidates choose the Hindi language, they will have 65 minutes for typing. Candidates with a scribe will get 90 minutes .

What Does a Stenographer Do?

A stenographer's main job is to record spoken words using a special skill called shorthand. They then type these notes into clear, written documents or reports. This work is essential in many government offices, ministries, and courts. Stenographers help ensure that official meetings, speeches, and legal proceedings are accurately documented. They need to be very fast and precise in both shorthand and typing to do their job well.
