What is the RRB NTPC Typing Test for?
The RRB NTPC Typing Skill Test is a special exam to check how fast and accurately you can type on a computer. It is required for candidates who want to become:
- Junior Clerk cum Typist
- Accounts Clerk cum Typist
- Senior Clerk cum Typist
This test helps the Railways find candidates who have good typing skills, which are needed for these office jobs.
Typing Language and Word Count Rules
Candidates will have to type a passage on a computer. You can choose to type in English or Hindi. Here are the main requirements:
| Language | Minimum Words to Type |
| English | At least 300 words |
| Hindi | At least 250 words |
English is the standard typing language. If you choose to type in Hindi, you must be familiar with either the Kruti Dev or Mangal font . Make sure you practice with the correct font if you plan to type in Hindi.
How the Typing Test Will Happen
The Computer Based Typing Skill Test (CBTST) will have three main parts:
- Typing Practice Session (1 minute): First, you will get 1 minute to practice. This is to help you get used to the keyboard before the actual test starts.
- Short Break (30 seconds): After the practice, there will be a 30-second break.
- Main Typing Test (10 minutes): The actual test will be for 10 minutes . During this time, your typing speed and accuracy will be checked.
Important Instructions During the Test
Here are some key things to remember during the typing test:
- The test checks both your typing speed and how many mistakes you make.
- If you finish typing the whole passage before 10 minutes are over, you can start typing the passage again from the beginning. You can keep doing this until the 10 minutes are up.
- You must type the full passage at least once within the 10 minutes. If you fail to do this, you will be disqualified from the test.
- Also, if you do not type the minimum required words ( 300 in English or 250 in Hindi ) within 10 minutes, your typed passage will not be checked. You will not pass the test.
- You are not allowed to use any editing tools or functions to correct your typing during the test.
How Typing Mistakes Are Counted
The RRBs have a specific way to count mistakes. This is how it works:
- Mistakes will be divided into two types: full mistakes and half mistakes .
- The good news is that the RRBs will ignore a small number of your mistakes. Up to 5% of the total words you type will not be counted as errors.
- The final number of mistakes will be calculated using this formula:
Final Mistakes = Total Mistakes - (5% of Total Words Typed)
How Your Typing Speed Is Calculated
After counting the mistakes, your typing speed will be calculated to see if you meet the required speed. The formula for typing speed is:
Typing Speed = (Total Words Typed - Final Count of Mistakes) ÷ Time (in minutes)
For example, if a candidate types 400 words in 10 minutes and after removing the 5% buffer, has 30 final mistakes , their speed will be calculated based on (400 - 30) words over 10 minutes.
Minimum Speed Needed to Pass
To pass the typing skill test, you must achieve a certain minimum typing speed. These speeds are different for English and Hindi:
| Language | Minimum Speed Required |
| English | 30 words per minute (WPM) |
| Hindi | 25 words per minute (WPM) |
Make sure you practice regularly to achieve these speeds with good accuracy. Remember, using any editing tools during the test is strictly forbidden and can lead to disqualification.
