The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) will now manage the hiring process for Sub Inspectors (SI) and Constables in the Railway Protection Force (RPF). This important change will begin from the year 2025 . Previously, the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) was responsible for these exams. The Ministry of Railways announced these updates, stating that RPF SI and Constable exams will now be held every year. This step aims to make the hiring process faster, more transparent, and provide regular job opportunities for young people across India.

Key Changes in RPF Recruitment

From 2025, candidates looking to join the RPF will see two major differences:

  • New Exam Body: The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) will now conduct all RPF SI and Constable recruitment exams. This replaces the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB), which previously handled these responsibilities.
  • Annual Exams: Exams for RPF SI and Constable posts will now be held every year . This will ensure that eligible candidates have regular chances to apply and join the force, making the recruitment cycle more predictable.

These updates are part of a larger plan to modernize RPF recruitment. The new process will also help align RPF hiring standards with those of other Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).

Understanding the RPF Selection Process

The selection process for both RPF Sub Inspectors and Constables involves several stages designed to pick the most suitable candidates. Here are the steps a candidate will go through:

  1. Computer Based Test (CBT): This is the first and most important step, an online examination that tests a candidate's academic knowledge.
  2. Physical Efficiency Test (PET) & Physical Measurement Test (PMT): Candidates who successfully pass the CBT will then undergo physical fitness and measurement tests. These checks ensure candidates meet the necessary physical standards for the role.
  3. Document Verification: After clearing the physical tests, candidates must submit and verify their original documents. This step confirms the accuracy of the information provided in their application.
  4. Medical Examination: The final stage involves a thorough medical check-up. This examination is carried out by CAPF Medical Officers or Grade-I Government Medical Officers to ensure candidates are medically fit for duty.

Details of the Computer Based Test (CBT)

The Computer Based Test (CBT) is designed to evaluate a candidate's general knowledge and mental abilities. Here are the key details about this online exam:

Exam Duration 90 minutes
Total Marks 120 marks
Subjects Covered
  • General Awareness: Tests knowledge about current affairs, history, geography, economy, etc.
  • Arithmetic: Assesses basic math skills like number systems, percentages, profit and loss, etc.
  • General Intelligence and Reasoning: Evaluates logical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical abilities.

Physical Standards: PET and PMT

The Physical Efficiency Test (PET) involves various physical activities to check stamina and strength. The Physical Measurement Test (PMT) checks specific body measurements. These tests are crucial for roles in the RPF.

New Recruitment Rules for Constable (Executive)

The Ministry of Railways has introduced revised recruitment rules for the RPF Constable (Executive) post. These changes, also effective from 2025, modify key eligibility criteria:

  • Age Limit: The new age limit for Constable (Executive) candidates is now between 18 and 23 years . Earlier, candidates could apply between 18 and 25 years.
  • Minimum Height for Male Candidates: The updated minimum height requirement for male candidates is now 170 cm . This is an increase from the previous requirement of 165 cm.
  • Chest Measurements (Male Candidates): Male candidates must meet specific chest measurements:
    • Unexpanded Chest: 80 cm
    • Expanded Chest: 85 cm (This means the chest must expand by at least 5 cm when breathed in)

Why These Updates Are Important

These updates are being introduced to make the RPF recruitment process more modern and effective. By aligning the selection procedure and eligibility criteria with those of other central police forces, the government aims to ensure a streamlined, fair, and transparent hiring system. This will benefit both the candidates, by offering clearer pathways to employment, and the RPF, by recruiting suitable personnel efficiently.
