The 2027 QS World University Rankings by Subject are out, evaluating over 1,900 institutions across 55 academic areas. This year's report includes more than 300 new universities. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States maintains its top position for engineering and technology for the 15th consecutive year. MIT achieved perfect scores in academic reputation, employer reputation, and faculty-student ratio.
The rankings analyze universities across five broad subject areas. Southern Asia shows the highest percentage of improved universities. East Asia contributes the most new institutions to the rankings this year.
Arts and Humanities
The University of Oxford leads in Arts and Humanities. This subject area covers history, modern languages, and philosophy. Harvard University ranks second. The University of Cambridge is third.
Engineering and Technology
MIT is the top university globally for Engineering and Technology. This includes chemical and civil engineering. Data Science and Artificial Intelligence are also covered. Stanford University and ETH Zurich follow in the rankings.
Life Sciences and Medicine
Harvard University also tops the Life Sciences and Medicine category. This area includes medicine, nursing, and psychology. The University of Oxford is second. Johns Hopkins University ranks third.
Natural Sciences
Harvard University leads in Natural Sciences. Subjects include chemistry and mathematics. MIT is ranked second. The University of Oxford is third in this category.
Social Sciences and Management
Harvard University is the top university for Social Sciences and Management. This area includes business and sociology. Harvard received a perfect score for employer reputation. The University of Oxford is second. Stanford University ranks third.
