Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann ordered a change to the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) tie-breaking rule. The announcement came after a Class 10 student questioned the existing policy. This change affects how student ranks are determined when multiple students achieve the same marks.
PSEB Tie-Breaking Rule Revision
The rule change addresses concerns raised at the "Sitare Zameen Te" program in Chandigarh. This event honored top-performing students from classes 8, 10, and 12. A student from Amritsar highlighted an issue in class 10 rankings.
She pointed out that three girls from her district scored identical marks. However, they received different ranks. This difference was solely based on their ages. The previous rule placed younger students higher on the merit list.
New Rule: Marks Only
Chief Minister Mann directed the education department to implement the change. The new policy prioritizes academic scores exclusively. Age will no longer be a factor in ranking students with equal marks.
This decision aims to ensure fairness. It recognizes the equal effort students invest in their studies. Students achieving the same score will now receive identical recognition.
Impact on Students
Rank holds significance for students. It contributes to school, district, and state-level recognition. A system based solely on marks is seen as more transparent and equitable. The Punjab government has signaled that student feedback is valued.
The shift emphasizes fair evaluation. It ensures that academic achievement is the sole determinant of merit. This aligns with the principle that hard work should be rewarded equally. The revised policy promotes a more just academic environment for all students.
