The Odisha government has ordered the immediate withdrawal of erroneous textbooks for students in Classes 1 through 8. The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) received instructions to halt distribution. New, corrected editions will be reprinted to address widespread errors.
This decision follows significant public backlash and criticism from education experts. Opposition parties, teacher groups, and concerned citizens highlighted numerous factual, geographical, and inappropriate content issues in the books. These textbooks were intended for the 2026-27 academic session.
Government Response and Actions
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has formed a committee. This committee will investigate how the mistakes occurred during the printing process. The goal is to prevent similar issues in the future.
The School and Mass Education Department is implementing a two-pronged plan. This plan addresses immediate needs and long-term solutions.
Corrective Measures
For immediate relief, corrected textbook PDFs will be uploaded online. This ensures open access to accurate material. The public will have opportunities to provide feedback on Odisha School Education Programme Authority (OSEPA) portals before final prints.
To bridge the gap until new books are available, teachers will use digital sheets. Printed correction sheets and inserts will also be distributed. These will help maintain classroom learning continuity.
The department plans to print 2.98 crore new copies. These will be produced by private presses at the government's expense. The new physical books will be provided free of cost by District Education Officers (DEOs).
Administrative Oversight
Four senior SCERT officials face immediate suspension. This action is due to alleged negligence. Disciplinary proceedings have begun against six other officials.
Ensuring Uninterrupted Learning
Teachers are instructed to use provided correction lists. This will ensure daily lessons and unit tests proceed as scheduled. The revised physical textbooks will be distributed after public review is complete.
