An Odisha teenager has forgone a top computer science seat at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. Maharuf, who secured an All India Rank (AIR) 32 in JEE Advanced 2026, chose to join his twin brother, Mansroor, at IIT Madras instead. Mansroor achieved AIR 168 in the same examination.
Decision to Stay Together
Maharuf's rank would have secured him a place in IIT Bombay's computer science program. However, Mansroor's rank made it difficult to obtain the same program at IIT Bombay. Maharuf opted to attend IIT Madras with his brother to pursue computer science.
"I could have gotten a computer science seat at IIT Bombay, but I want to study with my brother," Maharuf told reporters. Both brothers are now preparing to study computer science at IIT Madras.
Mansroor expressed gratitude for his brother's support. "This means a lot to me," he stated. He added that they have always supported each other and wished to continue their studies together.
Family Background
The twins' parents are both medical professionals. Their father, Sr. Mansroor Ahmad Khan, is an MD in Medicine and heads the dispensary at IIT Bhubaneshwar. Their mother, Dr. Zeenat Begum, is a Gynecologist.
Dr. Zeenat Begum relocated to Kota with the twins to support their JEE preparation. Their father remained in Odisha due to work commitments. Dr. Khan credited his wife for their children's academic success, stating she provided crucial support and a conducive learning environment.
Academic Achievements
Maharuf and Mansroor have consistently demonstrated strong academic performance.
Maharuf's Results:
- JEE Advanced 2026: AIR 32
- JEE Main 2026: AIR 44
- Class 10: 95.2%
- Class 12: 98.6%
Mansroor's Results:
- JEE Advanced 2026: AIR 168
- JEE Main 2026: AIR 58

Study Habits
The twins followed a disciplined study routine in Kota. Their day typically included five hours of coaching, one hour for doubt clearing with teachers, and six hours of self-study. They also allocated time for badminton daily. Phone usage was restricted to educational purposes.
A key strength for the brothers was their healthy competition. They explained difficult topics to each other and resolved doubts together, often reducing the need to consult teachers.
Future Plans
Beyond engineering, both brothers aim to prepare for the Civil Services examinations after completing their computer science degrees. They are also considering pursuing management studies in the future.
