Odisha schools will start their summer vacation on April 27, 2026 . The decision comes due to extreme heatwave conditions across the state. Temperatures have reached 44°C in some areas, including Jharsuguda and Talcher. This move aims to protect student health. The School and Mass Education Department recommended the change. The break typically begins in early May. All government, government-aided, and private schools are included. Exams and administrative tasks will proceed with safety measures. Digital learning programs will support academic continuity.

Heatwave Prompts Early Closure

Temperatures have exceeded 40°C in 24 Odisha towns. Jharsuguda and Talcher recorded 44°C. The state government previously shortened Anganwadi hours. Morning shifts were implemented to protect children. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued warnings. Heatwave alerts cover districts like Khordha and Bolangir. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced the postponed vacation. The decision follows these extreme weather conditions.

Education Continuity Measures

Regular classes are suspended. Scheduled exams will continue. Crucial administrative duties will also proceed. Census work will take place. Safety precautions are mandatory for all activities. The Odisha School Education Programme Authority (OSEPA) is developing a program. This includes digital assignments. It covers students from Shishu Vatika to Class 8. Audio-visual content will be provided. This ensures learning continues during the extended holiday. Census operations have restricted timings. They will run from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This is for the safety of public employees.

Statewide Impact and Similar Actions

The early vacation is a direct response to severe weather. Student safety is the top priority. Educational continuity is maintained through digital platforms. Similar measures are being taken in other states. Jharkhand and Bihar have adjusted school timetables. These states are also facing rising temperatures. Odisha's decision aligns with these efforts to protect students from the heatwave.
