Odisha has extended its free textbook and mid-day meal programs to students in Classes 9 and 10. This expansion covers all government and government-aided schools across the state. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced the initiative on August 15 .
Expanded Welfare Scheme
Previously, these welfare programs were limited to elementary levels, covering Classes 1 through 8. The new policy aims to combat secondary school dropout rates. It also seeks to increase attendance and improve adolescent nutrition.
Approximately eight lakh students will benefit from this expanded scheme. They will receive quality study materials and nutritious meals at school. The state anticipates a significant impact on educational access and student well-being.
Key Program Details
The program targets secondary level students in government and aided schools.
- Free Textbooks: Introduced on the 80th Independence Day.
- Mid-Day Meals: Hot lunches will be provided through state schemes like the Mukhyamantri POSHAN Yojana.
Distribution and Objectives
Textbook distribution will occur at block-level locations. This is to manage logistics effectively and avoid district-level complexities.
The primary objectives are to:
- Reduce dropout rates between Class 8 and Class 9.
- Ease the financial burden on low-income families.
- Ensure adequate nutrition for adolescent students.
Adolescents require specific nutrients for growth. This program addresses those nutritional needs. It aims to support both academic progress and overall health.
