NTA Staffing: 24 Permanent Posts Filled, Rajya Sabha Told

The National Testing Agency (NTA) currently operates with 24 permanent staff members out of 39 sanctioned posts. Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar provided these details in the Rajya Sabha on July 22, 2026 . The agency also relies on 197 contractual and outsourced personnel to manage its operations.

To bolster its workforce, the NTA has established 16 new permanent positions. These include eight Director-level roles and eight Joint Director-level positions. The agency recruits additional staff on a short-term basis as needed. Of the 197 external personnel, 73 are on contract, while 124 are outsourced.

NTA's Examination Volume

Since its inception in 2018, the NTA has conducted over 270 examinations. These exams have registered more than 6.6 crore candidates. In the current year, the NTA has administered 12 examinations so far. These have attracted approximately 65 lakh candidate registrations, according to Minister Majumdar.

Financial Overview

The NTA's financial records show a consistent surplus in income over expenditure for the past five years. In the fiscal year 2023-2024, the agency reported an expenditure of ₹10,40,95,88,274 and an income of ₹11,16,84,39,078.

Recent Examination and Protests

The NEET UG examination was held on May 3, 2026 . It took place at 5,432 centres across 565 cities, offering the test in 13 languages. A re-examination, following allegations of a paper leak, was conducted on June 21, 2026 . Results for this exam were announced on July 16, 2026 .

Protesters from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) are demonstrating at Jantar Mantar, Delhi. They are demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. CJP spokespersons met with Union ministers on July 24, 2026 . Their demands include compensation for families of suicide victims and the withdrawal of police cases against peaceful protesters.
