Gautam Buddh Nagar administration has ordered Noida schools to limit student screen time. The new rule caps daily screen use at 30 minutes for primary students and 60 minutes for upper primary students. Parents expressed concerns about excessive screen exposure, with children reportedly spending four to five hours daily on digital devices. The district administration implemented these limits to protect student health.

Reasons for the Screen Time Cap

Parent associations highlighted issues with schools using smart boards for full lessons. Teachers displayed textbooks and conducted classwork and homework reviews on these boards. This continuous screen use reportedly caused eye strain, headaches, and short-sightedness in students. Concentration levels also decreased.

The administration stated that digital boards are supplementary tools. They should enhance learning, not replace reading, sports, or essential classroom activities. These activities are crucial for a child's overall development.

New School Guidelines

Schools must now use smart boards only for explaining complex concepts or showing short videos and necessary materials. Digital boards will become occasional teaching aids. Blackboards, whiteboards, and greenboards are to be used for writing tasks and student interaction.

The administration mandated the 20-20-20 rule. After every 20 minutes of screen time, students must look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Schools must ensure proper screen brightness and adequate classroom lighting, including natural light.

Students must maintain a safe distance from digital boards. Eye health check-ups will be conducted quarterly for all students. Schools must share these reports with parents. These directives apply to all government-aided and private schools in the district.

Schools are required to incorporate digital-free periods and digital-zero days into their weekly schedules. Activity-based learning, reading, sports, and group discussions must return to the daily routine. Designated officials will monitor compliance with these rules.

The objective is to balance digital learning with traditional methods. This aims to provide safer classrooms and promote healthier daily habits for all students.
