The National Medical Commission (NMC) has eliminated the population-based cap on MBBS seats. The NMC also removed a 150-seat limit for new medical colleges. These changes, effective immediately, aim to increase medical education seats across India. The revisions were published in a gazette notification.
End of Population Norms
Previously, the NMC limited medical seats to 100 per 10 lakh people. Southern states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka had opposed this rule. They argued it hindered expansion in states with existing capacity. The new policy removes this 100-seat per 10 lakh people quota entirely. This change prioritizes national demand for doctors.
Increased Seat Capacity
The NMC has also lifted the 150-seat cap for new medical institutions. Both new and existing colleges can now apply for 200 or 250 MBBS seats. This requires meeting faculty and infrastructure standards. The increase is expected to benefit NEET 2026 applicants.
Hospital Proximity Redefined
The NMC has updated rules for hospital and college proximity. The previous 30-minute travel time rule is replaced. Colleges must now have their teaching hospitals within a 10 km radius. This distance increases to 15 km for North-Eastern and Himalayan regions. This change provides clear, objective criteria for accreditation.
