India's top policy think tank, NITI Aayog, proposed integrating General Employability and Entrepreneurship Skills (GEES) from the 6th grade and vocational 'Kaushal Tracks' from the 9th grade. This initiative aims to boost skill development in schools by 2047. The recommendations come from NITI Aayog's report, 'Reimagining Skilling for Viksit Bharat@2047'.

GEES for All

The report recommends introducing GEES to all students from Grade 6 to Grade 12. These foundational skills include communication, digital literacy, financial knowledge, teamwork, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship. Studies show these skills improve job prospects and earnings. Employers frequently cite these foundational skills as essential for most jobs.

Kaushal Tracks for Specialization

Structured vocational pathways, called Kaushal Tracks, would begin in Grade 9. These tracks focus on specific trades. They aim to integrate vocational education through various teaching methods. Not all schools will offer these tracks. Availability depends on student numbers, school facilities, and budgets.

Trade selection for Kaushal Tracks should consider local job market demands. It should also align with broader career aspirations and national skill needs. This ensures the programs remain relevant. A government and World Bank study noted current vocational offerings often don't match local economic needs. Many schools select trades without reflecting local industries or available job opportunities.
