A parliamentary committee recommended holding the medical entrance exam NEET-UG multiple times annually. The proposal aims to reduce student stress. It also seeks to mitigate the impact of exam disruptions. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare made the suggestion. The committee discussed the "Conduct of NEET Examinations under the NMC Act, 2019." Officials from the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the National Medical Commission (NMC) attended the meeting. Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav was also present.
Multiple Exam Attempts Proposed
The committee's recommendation comes amid criticism of national entrance tests. NEET-UG exams faced cancellations previously. The first pen-paper NEET-UG test was canceled due to a paper leak. A re-examination is scheduled for June 21 .
Potential Benefits of Multiple Exams
Holding NEET-UG more than once a year offers several advantages. Over 22 lakh students compete for limited medical seats. A single exam attempt creates significant psychological pressure. Multiple attempts could lower this pressure. Students would have more chances to secure a seat.
Exam irregularities also pose a risk. Paper leaks and center issues can disrupt the process. A canceled exam wastes a full academic year for many. Multiple exams would protect students from such failures. Any system breakdown would affect fewer aspirants.
This approach mirrors the JEE Main for engineering admissions. Students can take the exam, identify weaknesses. They can improve their scores. They would not need to wait another year for another attempt. This allows for better preparation and performance.
