Over 1,900 new MBBS seats are now available for candidates in the 2026-27 academic year. The National Medical Commission (NMC) released the updated seat matrix for undergraduate medical courses on July 15, 2026. This announcement comes just five days before the NEET UG 2026 results are expected.
MBBS Seat Expansion
India now has a total of 136,939 MBBS seats across 823 medical colleges. This represents an increase of approximately 9,900 seats from previous years. This count excludes seats at Institutions of National Importance like AIIMS and JIPMER.
Government medical colleges offer 63,296 seats. Private medical colleges provide 73,643 seats. This expansion includes 2,400 seats from 25 newly established medical colleges. Seven new government colleges added 400 seats. Eighteen new private colleges contributed 2,000 seats.
Timing of Seat Matrix Release
The NEET UG 2026 exam was held on June 21, 2026. Over 2.2 million students appeared for the exam. The results are anticipated on July 20, 2026. The release of the updated seat matrix provides students with vital information before the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) announces counselling dates.

College Compliance
The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) has directed private colleges to review their approved seat numbers. Colleges must submit a mandatory bank guarantee within seven days. Failure to do so will prevent the issuance of a Letter of Permission. Colleges cannot conduct counselling until their seat numbers are approved.
