The first round of NEET PG 2025 seat allotment results has been released. It shows a clear choice among top-ranking students: most prefer to study MD General Medicine . This year, this medical branch was the favourite among candidates who scored very high marks in the NEET PG exam. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) published these initial results. Another key finding is that PGIMER-Dr. RML Hospital in New Delhi was a top choice, securing many seats for the best students. Surgical fields, such as General Surgery, saw fewer top students choosing them in this first round.
Top Choices: General Medicine Leads Among High Scorers
The provisional list shows that out of the top 100 students , a large number, 46 , chose MD General Medicine. This highlights a strong and ongoing interest in becoming a general physician. MD Radio-Diagnosis, which involves using imaging techniques like X-rays and MRI, was the second most popular choice. 40 students from the top 100 picked this field. However, its popularity has slightly decreased compared to previous years. Other specialized medical branches received less interest from the highest scorers in this first round of admissions. For example, MD Dermatology (skin diseases) and MS Obstetrics & Gynaecology (women's health) each got only 3 seats in the top 100. MS General Surgery, which focuses on operations, also secured just 3 seats . MD Paediatrics (child health), MD Nuclear Medicine (using radioactive substances), and MS Orthopaedics (bone and joint surgery) each had only 1 student from the top 100 choosing them. This indicates that only a small number of top performers picked these other fields.
PGIMER-Dr. RML Hospital Secures Many Top Seats
The choices made by the very best students, those in the top 10 ranks, further highlight these trends. An impressive nine out of the first ten ranks went to students opting for MD General Medicine. Only the student with Rank 4 decided to pursue MD Radio-Diagnosis. This shows a very strong preference for General Medicine among students with the highest scores.
When looking at specific medical colleges, PGIMER-Dr. RML Hospital in New Delhi stood out. This hospital was chosen by six students among the top 10 for MD General Medicine seats. Many students and resident doctors explain that RML Hospital is a highly preferred option. They point to its excellent training structure, fair distribution of workload among doctors, and a generally good working environment as key reasons for its popularity.

Surgical Branches See Lower Interest from Top Students
Surgical courses, especially General Surgery, experienced lower interest from top candidates this year. As mentioned, only three students from the top 100 chose MS General Surgery. Doctors currently undergoing surgical training offer reasons for this trend. They often mention that surgical training is very demanding and has a steep learning curve. New surgeons also get limited chances for independent operations during their early training years. Furthermore, the long training period and a strict hierarchy (senior-junior system) within surgical departments continue to discourage some of the highest-scoring students from choosing surgical careers early on.
Impact on Future Medical Careers
These early trends could have important effects on the future of medical education and healthcare in India. If the strong preference for General Medicine continues in later counselling rounds, it might lead to increased competition for very specialized medical courses. These are courses like DM (Doctor of Medicine for super-specialties in medicine) and MCh (Magister Chirurgiae for super-specialties in surgery). At the same time, if fewer top students choose surgical fields now, it could mean that over time, there might be fewer highly skilled surgeons available to work in government hospitals. The second round of counselling will provide a clearer picture of these choices and confirm if these trends will continue. However, based on the initial numbers, MD General Medicine is clearly the most sought-after choice for the top performers in NEET PG 2025 .
