The Indian government is considering a significant reform for medical and engineering admissions. The Ministry of Education is exploring a proposal to give 50 percent weightage to Class 12 board exam results. This would apply to admissions for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). The remaining 50 percent would come from entrance exam scores.

Committee Reviews Admission Reforms

This proposed change aims to reduce student stress. Currently, admission to NEET and JEE heavily relies on entrance exam performance. The new system would create a more balanced assessment. Students would not solely depend on one high-stakes test for their future.

The move follows concerns about examination irregularities. Recent incidents of evaluation errors and alleged paper leaks have raised questions about existing systems. The Ministry wants to make the admission process more robust and fair.

Potential Impact on Students

If approved, the reform means board exam marks will hold equal importance as entrance test scores. This differs from the current system. Board exams currently serve as a minimum qualifying benchmark. Entrance exams largely determine admission.

Students might benefit from a broader academic evaluation. The change could allow for more integrated preparation. Students could focus on both annual board exams and entrance tests simultaneously. This could reduce reliance on intense, entrance-exam-focused coaching.

Current Status of Reforms

A nine-member committee was formed last year to study these reforms. The committee is investigating student dependence on coaching centers. It also examines the issue of "dummy schools." Fairness in high-stakes entrance tests is another focus area.

The committee is expected to submit its first report soon. The report will analyze current school syllabi and their alignment with entrance tests. The proposed admission changes are still under review. Official approval has not yet been granted.
