The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has incorporated history and culture from India's northeastern states into textbooks for students in Classes 1 through 8. This update aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the country's diversity.

Northeast History and Culture Added to Textbooks

The Ministry of Education confirmed the inclusion of northeast Indian history, culture, traditions, art, heritage, and contributions in the new NCERT textbooks. This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023.

Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary announced this change in a written response to Rajya Sabha MP Birendra Prasad Baishya. The move seeks to foster greater awareness and respect for the Northeast region among students nationwide.

Balanced Education and National Integration

The inclusion of northeastern content promotes a more balanced and geographically representative school curriculum. NEP 2020 emphasizes the 'Knowledge of India' concept, encouraging learning about the nation's achievements, challenges, and diverse cultural narratives.

This approach extends beyond a narrow view of culture. It incorporates local histories, traditions, and the voices of various communities, reflecting India's true diversity. Students in Classes 1-8 will now encounter references to the Northeast, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of the region.

Language and Cultural Representation

NCERT is also supporting India's linguistic diversity through language learning materials. The Ministry of Education stated that NCERT has developed Grade 6 R3 Language textbooks and age-appropriate materials for Grade 9 in 22 languages, including Assamese, Bodo, and Manipuri.

These language materials serve as a gateway to understanding the traditions and life of the Northeast. Language is seen as a vehicle for culture, memory, and identity.

Curriculum Development Involving Northeast Experts

The integration of northeastern content was part of a broader curriculum development process. NCERT conducted district-level consultations across states and union territories, including those in the Northeast.

State Focus Groups were formed, and experts from the region contributed position papers. Scholars and faculty from the Northeast participated in curriculum bodies like the National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee. NCERT also runs capacity-building programs focusing on cultural rootedness and Indian Knowledge Systems across the country.
