NCERT's New Status
The Ministry of Education officially declared NCERT a deemed university. This decision followed a review of NCERT's application. Experts from the University Grants Commission (UGC) evaluated the application. The UGC (Institutes Deemed to be Universities) Regulation, 2003, guided the process. Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumder, announced the development. He stated the status will boost educational research and innovation. It also strengthens NCERT's role as a policy advisor. NCERT will provide technical support to central and state governments.
According to Majumder, the Ministry of Education issued a notification. This notification, dated March 30, 2024, falls under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. The Ministry acted on the UGC's advice.
Future Directives
NCERT must now implement necessary steps. These steps align with the vision for its new status. The institution is directed to launch research programs. It will also develop innovative academic and doctoral courses. This will enhance its capacity for educational advancement.
