A team of law students from the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), Hyderabad, has won a major international law competition in Paris. The NALSAR team secured first place in the 5th Cross Examination Moot. They defeated a strong team from King's College London in the finals. This global competition took place from October 27 to 31 at Sciences Po and the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris.

The winning team from NALSAR Hyderabad included five talented students. They are Ashish Reddy , Dhruv Laalam , Jeetendra Vishwakarma , Sarthak Bansal , and Shivanetra Palanisamy . Their strong performance led them to victory over King's College London in the final round of the competition.

What is a Cross Examination Moot Competition?

A moot court competition is like a practice trial for law students. Students act as lawyers and argue a pretend case in front of judges, who are often real lawyers or experts. These competitions help students improve their legal skills, research, and public speaking. A 'cross-examination moot' specifically focuses on the skill of questioning witnesses in a court setting. This means students must ask sharp, clear questions and respond quickly to answers, much like real lawyers do.

The case presented during this competition focused on a complex legal problem. It was a construction arbitration dispute . Arbitration is a way to solve disagreements outside of traditional courts, where a neutral person helps both sides reach a solution. The dispute involved ending contracts related to battery production and selling . These contracts were between private companies and government bodies.

Students also had to examine serious claims. These claims involved dishonest actions during talks about construction permits . They also looked into disagreements about the cost of raw materials and how profits were shared between the parties. This topic required deep understanding of contract law, international business, and ethical practices.

Other Indian Universities Participated

Many other top Indian law universities also took part in this international competition. This shows the high level of legal education in India and the interest of Indian students in global legal challenges. The participating Indian universities included:

  • National Law University, Delhi
  • Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur
  • National Law School of India University, Bangalore
  • Christ University, Bangalore

Such wins boost the confidence of students and highlight the quality of teaching and training provided by Indian institutions like NALSAR.

The success also encourages more students to take part in international competitions. These events help students learn about different legal systems and build a global network. This win will inspire future law students in India to aim for similar international recognition.
