The Bar Council of India (BCI) reversed its decision to bar NALSAR University of Law graduates from enrolling in state bar councils. This action followed a reaction from Chief Justice of India Surya Kant.
The ban affected the 2026 batch of NALSAR graduates. Students had opposed CJI Surya Kant's participation as the chief guest at their convocation. The opposition reportedly stemmed from remarks made by CJI Kant regarding police action against NEET UG student protestors.
Ban Lifted After Supreme Court Intervention
The Supreme Court's intervention led to the withdrawal of the enrollment ban. The BCI stated that most students were not involved in the protest campaign.
CJI Surya Kant later questioned the BCI's intervention. He stated that every student has the right to protest. The BCI's initial order had prevented NALSAR's 2026 graduates from joining the legal profession.
