The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has shut down 164 unauthorized schools across Mumbai. The closures, announced on April 17, 2026 , affect an estimated 80,000 students ahead of the 2026-27 academic session. These schools lacked state or civic recognition and failed to meet safety and infrastructure standards.
Schools Closed for Non-Compliance
The BMC issued closure orders under Clause 18 of the Right to Education (RTE) Act. This law requires all schools to have official certification to operate. Many of the affected institutions operated from small residential spaces. They often lacked proper classrooms, playgrounds, and qualified staff.
The majority of these unauthorized schools are located in densely populated areas. These include Govandi, Mankhurd, Dharavi, and Malad. The BMC aims to prevent academic disruption for the students involved.
Student Relocation Plans
Deputy Municipal Commissioner Prachi Jambhekar stated the BMC is prepared to accommodate affected students. Municipal schools will offer double shifts or create extra divisions. This action aims to ensure students can continue their education without significant loss.
Out of the 164 identified schools, 48 managements submitted proposals for state approval in October 2025. Final decisions on these applications are still pending.
