Meghalaya has launched its first comprehensive school performance grading system. The Meghalaya School Performance Grading Index (MSPGI) covers all 11,443 recognized schools across the state. Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui officially launched the system. Officials describe the MSPGI as a tool for improvement, not a competition.
Index Details
The MSPGI utilizes data from UDISE+ 2025-26. Each school receives a score out of 1000 points. The grading is based on 43 specific indicators. These include accessibility, digital education, and infrastructure. National Education Policy 2020 activities and quality parameters are also assessed.
What Schools Receive
Under the MSPGI, every school will get a detailed report card. This report includes an overall score and a state ranking. Schools will also receive a performance grade. This information helps school leaders identify strengths and weaknesses. They can then develop targeted improvement plans. The system aims to address specific school challenges.
Grading Bands
Schools are categorized into 17 performance bands. The highest band is named 'Utkarsh.' The lowest band is 'Akanshi-10.' This bottom band identifies schools needing the most support. The index is benchmark-based. This allows schools to track their progress over time. They can also compare their performance against others.
State's Educational Progress
Meghalaya's MSPGI is modeled on the Union Ministry of Education's Performance Grading Index (PGI). Meghalaya is the first state to adapt this national framework. The state achieved a PGI score of 525.71 in the 2025-26 academic year. This marks an increase from its 2022-23 score of 401.62. The MSPGI is expected to provide granular data. This data will inform administration decisions at the local level.
