Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced a significant annual investment of over ₹1,200 crore for education. This funding aims to bolster the state's academic infrastructure as part of Meghalaya's Vision 2032. The announcement came during the Diamond Jubilee celebration of Synod College in Shillong.
The state government supports more than 4,500 educational institutions. It utilizes deficit and ad hoc grant systems to provide this assistance. The deficit grant system alone allocates approximately ₹120 crore annually for teacher salaries. This ensures financial stability for educators across Meghalaya.
Chief Minister Sangma highlighted education as the primary investment in human capital. He stated it is the most effective tool for societal change and the driving force for Meghalaya's future development. He credited the state's consistent financial support to institutions for its leading position among northeastern states.
Synod College Marks 60 Years
During the celebration, Chief Minister Sangma acknowledged Synod College's 60-year history. The college began with 43 students pursuing pre-university arts. It has since expanded to serve over 3,000 students.
Synod College offers higher secondary, undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. The institution has achieved four NAAC accreditations. Its most recent evaluation earned it an A+ grade.
Future Expansion Plans
Principal G. Lyngdoh shared plans for a new extended campus. This facility will be located at Mawpdang in New Shillong Township. The new campus will focus on skill-based and livelihood training. Programs are designed to empower youth from local and nearby villages.
Synod College aims to bridge academic learning with vocational skills. This initiative seeks to prepare students as responsible citizens. The goal is to equip them for the evolving economic landscape.
