High-Weightage Topics for Maharashtra SSC 2026 Science

Students can focus on these chapters and topics to improve their scores. These topics usually carry more marks in the exam, making them important for revision.

1. Periodic Classification

This chapter is about how chemical elements are arranged. It is a core part of Chemistry.

  • Mendeleev's Periodic Table: Learn how Dmitri Mendeleev first arranged elements. Understand its good points and its limitations.
  • Modern Periodic Table: Study the current way elements are arranged. Know about different 'blocks' (like s, p, d, f) and 'groups' (vertical columns) of elements. Be familiar with elements from atomic number 1 to 20.
  • Periodic Trends: Learn how properties like 'valency' (combining power of an element), 'atomic size' (size of an atom), 'metallic character' (how easily an element forms positive ions), and 'non-metallic character' (how easily an element forms negative ions) change across a period or down a group in the periodic table.
  • Dobereiner Triad: Understand the early attempt by Johann Dobereiner to group elements in sets of three with similar properties.
  • Newland's Octaves: Study John Newlands' attempt to arrange elements, where every eighth element showed similar properties, like notes in a musical octave.

2. Chemical Reaction & Equations

This section explains how substances change and form new ones.

  • Types of Reactions: Learn about different kinds of chemical reactions, including Combination (two or more reactants combine), Decomposition (one reactant breaks down), Displacement (one element replaces another), Oxidation (loss of electrons or gain of oxygen), and Reduction (gain of electrons or loss of oxygen) reactions.
  • Exothermic and Endothermic Processes: Understand 'exothermic' reactions, which release heat, and 'endothermic' reactions, which absorb heat.
  • Rusting: Study the process of rusting, which is the corrosion of iron.
  • Rancidity: Understand rancidity, which is the spoiling of food containing fats and oils due to oxidation.

3. Gravitation

This chapter covers the force that attracts bodies towards each other.

  • Newton's Universal Law of Gravitation: Understand Isaac Newton's law that describes the gravitational attraction between any two objects.
  • Kepler's Laws of Planetary Motion: Learn Johannes Kepler's three laws that describe the motion of planets around the Sun.
  • Mass and Weight: Know the clear difference between mass (amount of matter) and weight (force of gravity on mass).
  • Variation in the Value of 'g': Understand why the value of 'g' (acceleration due to gravity) changes at different places on Earth and at different altitudes.
  • Free Fall and Escape Velocity: Study what happens during 'free fall' (falling only under gravity) and 'escape velocity' (the minimum speed needed to escape a planet's gravity).
  • Numericals: Practice problems and calculations based on the concepts of gravitation.

Focusing on these important topics will help students prepare effectively for the upcoming Maharashtra SSC 2026 Science exam. Good preparation helps in achieving better results.
