The Maharashtra education department has made it a rule to install CCTV cameras in all classrooms used for Class 10 and Class 12 board exams. This new rule will be in effect for the upcoming board exams. The goal is to make exam centres better and stop cheating.
The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) will hold the Class 10 exams from February 20 to March 18, 2026 . The Class 12 exams are scheduled from February 10 to March 18, 2026 .
Schools and exam centres that do not have CCTV cameras in every classroom must install them before the exams start.
In Mumbai's west zone, 42 out of 198 exam centres for Class 10 and 20 out of 149 centres for Class 12 received notices for not having enough CCTV cameras in classrooms.
Sanjay Javir, the State Education Inspector, said that while some centres might have cameras in general areas, each classroom used for exams must now have its own CCTV camera.
Reports suggest that in the Mumbai division, which includes Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, about 90-95% of exam centres already have CCTV cameras. This is according to the board chairman, Rajendra Ahire.
However, teachers and principals have told the Maharashtra board that installing CCTV cameras in a short time using school funds will be difficult for many. They also raised concerns about changing exam centres, meaning teachers might have to supervise exams in schools different from their own.
