The APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) has temporarily removed the yearback system for students entering their fifth semester. This decision, made by the newly formed KTU Syndicate, applies to the 2024 batch and others progressing to the fifth semester. The move eliminates a mandatory credit requirement from the first and second semesters for fifth-semester admission.
Yearback System Removed
Previously, students needed a minimum number of credits from semesters one and two (S1 and S2) to advance to the fifth semester (S5). This requirement has now been waived. Students can register for S5 classes even if they have not met the former credit threshold.
This change allows students to continue their academic progression. They can attend fifth-semester classes while clearing any outstanding credits through supplementary examinations. The previous yearback policy, approved in 2024, held students back for a full academic year if they did not meet credit requirements.
Reasons for Withdrawal
Student representations and protests highlighted the impact of the stringent credit requirements. Students reported that limited academic calendars and delays in supplementary exam results created challenges. These factors contributed to students falling short of credit targets, causing stress and hindering academic progress.
The Higher Education Minister, Roji M. John, directed the new syndicate to intervene following these concerns. The syndicate's decision nullifies the previous Board of Governors' ruling from 2024 regarding the yearback system.
Impact on Students
The temporary withdrawal provides immediate relief. It ensures academic continuity for a significant number of engineering students. The university will communicate further details regarding supplementary exam schedules and procedures.
