Karnataka will introduce artificial intelligence (AI) and coding education in schools starting from Class 6. This initiative, announced by Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, aims to prepare students for a technology-driven global landscape. The programs are named 'AI Akshara Abhiyana' and 'Coding Gurukula'. Shivakumar made the announcement during his Independence Day address in Bengaluru.
AI Education Rollout
AI and coding will become part of the school curriculum for students in Class 6 and above. The state government is developing these programs to enhance the skills of young people. This aims to ensure they can compete internationally as technology advances.

The Chief Minister also emphasized improving the quality of education across schools and colleges. This enhancement is necessary to better equip students for future technology-driven careers.
AI University Planned
Karnataka is planning to establish India's first government-owned AI university. This university will be located in Bengaluru. The government is actively working on the program details for this new institution.
Previous Announcements
The proposal for an AI university was first revealed by Shivakumar in July. He spoke at the Google I/O Connect India 2026 event. At that time, he also confirmed the introduction of AI learning from Class 6.
Broader Tech Education Efforts
These upcoming initiatives precede the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2026 . The summit is scheduled for November 17-19 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre. The AI education programs are part of Karnataka's larger strategy. The goal is to strengthen technology education and prepare youth for global workforce demands.
