Karnataka has implemented a new grading system for the 2026 SSLC third language paper. The change removes numerical scores. Students will now receive grades from A to D. This reform affects the 2026 academic year onwards. School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa announced the change. The goal is to reduce academic pressure. This primarily targets the third language, often Hindi in Karnataka.
New Assessment Rules for SSLC Third Language
Students must still take the third language exam. However, results will not impact their final aggregate score. The total maximum score for SSLC has been reduced. It is now 525 marks, down from 625. The Karnataka government aims to keep the language in the curriculum. It also seeks to create a more supportive learning environment. This eliminates a pass-fail scenario for this paper. The change is effective immediately. It applies to all third-language options offered.
Core Changes in Assessment
The primary objective is to lessen exam stress. It aims to combat the 'fear of failure'. Statistics showed over 148,000 students failed Hindi last year. This was the most common third language.
