Karnataka plans to establish the nation's first government-led Artificial Intelligence (AI) University. Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced the initiative to bolster the state's AI ecosystem. The university aims to extend AI education beyond urban centers. This includes reaching students in rural classrooms.
The Chief Minister shared these plans ahead of the Bengaluru Tech Summit. He met with industry leaders to outline the next phase of AI development in Karnataka. Shivakumar emphasized the importance of investing in rural schools for AI education. He stated the government is developing a dedicated curriculum. This curriculum will support AI learning from an early age.
AI Education for All
The goal is to introduce AI learning as early as Class 6. This will embed AI understanding within the school system. It will not be treated as a specialized college subject. Shivakumar highlighted Bangalore's strong talent pool and innovation ecosystem. He mentioned ongoing discussions with Google for this project. Shivakumar urged companies to invest in rural schools. He said the state will plan the necessary curriculum.
The AI University's establishment date is not yet announced. This was confirmed following an announcement on July 14, 2026. The event was 'Google I/O Connect India 2026'. The vision includes expanding infrastructure beyond cities and towns.
Industry Support for AI Initiative
Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Biocon Executive Chairperson, called Bangalore the AI capital of India. She praised the state's approach to building an AI architecture and ecosystem. Shaw sees significant potential in AI education. She stated that educating youth in AI and creating AI-based jobs is crucial for a country's future.
The Bengaluru Tech Summit is scheduled for November 17-19, 2026 . It will be held at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC). Shivakumar invited CEOs to participate actively. He described the summit as a platform for policy, partnerships, and outcomes.
